Types of Insulation

Typical costs, last reviewed September 2026. Source: Energy Saving Trust, July 2026 prices (unsubsidised, gas-heated home). What you save depends on your home.

Cavity Wall Insulation

Fill the gap between the two layers of your outside walls with insulating material. Common in homes built after the 1920s.

  • Saves around £110-£380 a year
  • Typical cost £950-£3,900
  • About two hours for an average home
  • Ask for a 25-year guarantee

Loft Insulation

Reduce heat escaping through your roof with mineral wool rolls or blown insulation. An uninsulated home can lose around 25% of its heat this way.

  • Saves around £140-£360 a year (from none)
  • Typical cost £650-£1,200
  • 270mm depth recommended
  • Lifespan of around 40 years

  • Check planning rules with your council

Insulation boards or an insulated stud wall fitted to the inside of solid walls. An option when external work isn't possible.

  • Saves around £140-£500 a year
  • Around £12,000 for a 3-bed semi
  • Leaves the outside unchanged
  • Slightly reduces room sizes

  • Helps stop rooms overheating in summer
  • Keeps heat in during winter

Specialist Insulation and Removal

Superfoil Insulation

Thin multi-layer reflective (multifoil) insulation for places where thicker insulation won't fit. Check its tested performance, as thinner does not mean equal.

  • Thin profile for limited spaces
  • Most products need air gaps to work as designed
  • Used in roofs, walls and floors
  • Ask for independently tested performance

Spray Foam Insulation Removal

Removal of spray foam insulation where it is causing problems with roof timbers, ventilation, or a sale or remortgage.

  • Some lenders have been wary of spray foam in roof spaces
  • Check what your lender or surveyor needs first
  • Roof timbers may need repair after removal
  • Get written quotes after a survey

ECO4 and Other Insulation Funding

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) is a government obligation on energy suppliers in Great Britain. It is not a grant: suppliers and installers decide what support to offer, so work may be fully or partly funded and you may be asked to contribute. ECO4 ends on 31 December 2026 and there is no successor scheme.

Who May Qualify for ECO4?

  • Owner-occupiers with an EPC rating of D-G (private tenants E-G, with the owner's permission)
  • Households getting certain benefits, such as Universal Credit, Pension Credit or Housing Benefit
  • Through your council (ECO4 Flex): household income under £31,000, or other local routes
  • Apply through an energy supplier or your local council

Other Options

  • England: Warm Homes: Local Grant through councils (EPC D-G, income usually £36,000 or less)
  • Scotland: Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan. Wales: Warm Homes Nest scheme
  • Northern Ireland: Affordable Warmth Scheme and NISEP
  • The Great British Insulation Scheme closed on 31 March 2026
  • Installed insulation has 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5%

UK Energy Partnership is run by Harber Glaves Trading Ltd. We are not a government body and cannot decide who gets funding. Check eligibility with the official scheme: ECO4 on GOV.UK or Warm Homes: Local Grant.
