What is Loft Insulation?

Loft insulation is a layer of material, most often mineral wool rolls, laid between and over the joists in your loft space. An uninsulated home can lose around 25% of its heat through the roof, and loft insulation reduces that heat loss.

Building regulations recommend a minimum depth of 270mm for mineral wool. Going from no insulation to 270mm saves around £140-£360 a year depending on your home, but topping up from about 120mm saves much less: around £13-£35 a year (Energy Saving Trust, July 2026 prices). Easy-to-reach, damp-free lofts can often be done yourself; flat roofs, damp lofts and lived-in lofts need a professional. If you want to store things up there, Better Lofts explains how to board a loft without squashing the insulation.

Funding May Help With the Cost

ECO4 ends on 31 December 2026 and work must be finished by then. It is not a grant: work may be fully or partly funded, and you may be asked to contribute. In England, councils also run the Warm Homes: Local Grant (EPC D-G, household income usually £36,000 or less). The Great British Insulation Scheme closed on 31 March 2026.

UK Energy Partnership is run by Harber Glaves Trading Ltd. We are not a government body and cannot decide who gets funding. Check eligibility with the official scheme: ECO4 or Warm Homes: Local Grant.
