💡 Tip

The highest rates here (17.5p to 25p) are only for systems installed by that supplier, and the 12p and 15.1p tariffs need you to buy your electricity from them. On this estimate, the gap between the highest and lowest listed rate is about £429 a year. SEG is only available in Great Britain.

🔋 Solar vs Solar + Battery

A battery adds cost. Whether it shortens or lengthens payback depends on your usage, tariffs and the battery price.

How This Estimate Works

  • Panel cost: government solar PV cost data for MCS-certified installs, April 2025 to March 2026 (median £1,780 per kW up to 4kW, £1,697 per kW for 4 to 10kW). The Energy Saving Trust puts a typical 4.5kWp system at around £7,600.
  • Battery cost: the Energy Saving Trust says battery storage tends to cost around £5,000 to £8,000.
  • Generation: 750kWh a year per kW on a south-facing roof, based on Which?'s figure of more than 3,000kWh a year for a typical 4kWp system. East/west and north-facing roofs are given a lower figure.
  • Electricity price: 26.32p per kWh, the Ofgem price cap unit rate for 1 October to 31 December 2026.
  • Self-use: we assume you use 35% of what you generate without a battery and 70% with one, never more than your annual usage. These are our assumptions, not published figures; yours depends on when you use electricity.
  • For comparison, the Energy Saving Trust estimates payback of around 9 to 12 years with export payments for a four-bedroom detached home (July 2026 prices). It doesn't state all of its assumptions, such as system size, so results here can differ.

Estimates only, not a quote or a guaranteed saving. Typical costs, last reviewed September 2026. SEG payments need an MCS-certified installation. UK Energy Partnership is run by Harber Glaves Trading Ltd and is not a government body.
