Solar Battery Storage
Store your solar energy and use it when you need it most. Send a free enquiry and Better Home Hub can introduce you to battery installers.
What is Solar Battery Storage?
Solar battery storage systems allow you to store excess electricity generated by your solar panels during the day for use at night or during periods of high demand. Instead of exporting surplus energy to the grid at low rates, you can save it and use it when electricity prices are higher.
Batteries can often be added to an existing solar panel installation, though some systems need a different inverter. How much a battery cuts your bills depends on how much electricity you use when your panels aren't generating.
Key Benefits
Lower Energy Bills
Use stored solar energy during peak rate times instead of buying expensive grid electricity
Energy Independence
Rely less on the grid. Some systems can also keep essential circuits running in a power cut, but only if set up for backup
Make More of Your Solar
Store and use more of the energy you generate instead of exporting it at low rates
Smart Energy Management
Battery controls can decide when to store, use or export your solar energy
Environmental Impact
Use more clean solar energy and reduce your carbon footprint further
Compare Warranties
Batteries lose some capacity over time. Compare warranty length and the capacity guaranteed between quotes
How Solar Battery Storage Works
Solar Generation
Your solar panels generate electricity during daylight hours
Power Your Home
Electricity is first used to power your home's immediate needs
Store Excess
Surplus energy charges your battery for later use
Use or Export
Use stored energy at night or export if battery is full
Battery Storage Costs
Typical costs, last reviewed September 2026. Source: Energy Saving Trust solar panels advice (updated August 2026), which does not give a battery capacity for this range.
Potential Savings
What a battery saves depends on how much electricity you use in the evening, your import tariff and your export rate. Ask installers to show estimated savings with and without a battery, and the assumptions behind them.

Common Questions
Can I add a battery to my existing solar panels?
Often, yes. Some systems can take a battery with little change, while others need a new or additional inverter. An installer should check your system before quoting.
How long do solar batteries last?
Batteries gradually lose capacity as they are used. Lifespans vary by product, so compare the warranty length and the capacity each manufacturer guarantees at the end of it.
What size battery do I need?
It depends on how much electricity you use when your panels are not generating. Ofgem's typical household electricity use is 2,500 kWh a year, but your own usage matters more: ask the installer to size the battery from your bills or smart meter data.
Are there grants for solar batteries?
There is no general grant for home batteries. Installed batteries have 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5%. Home Energy Scotland does not list loans for batteries on their own. A battery that can export may also earn Smart Export Guarantee payments in Great Britain.
