Types of Heat Pump You Can Ask About
Air Source Heat Pumps
Extracts heat from the outside air. Keeps working in cold weather, though less efficiently on the coldest days.

- ✓Seasonal efficiency (SCOP) generally around 3.0 in the UK
- ✓No ground works needed
- ✓Needs outdoor space for the unit
Ground Source Heat Pumps
Uses pipes buried in trenches or boreholes to collect heat from the ground.
- ✓Around £15,000 with trenches before the grant; boreholes cost considerably more (Energy Saving Trust)
- ✓Around three units of heat per unit of electricity
- ✓Around £130–£650 a year saved replacing a gas boiler (EST, four-bed detached)
