Your main options

Typical costs are guides, not quotes. Your survey and quotes will differ.

Pay for a new gas boiler

Around £2,500 to £4,000 for a like-for-like combi

  • Around £3,000 for a new system or regular boiler, and around £4,000 to switch one of those to a combi.
  • Gas work must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
  • There is no ban on replacing a gas boiler in an existing home. Gas boilers are charged at the standard rate of VAT.

Switch to a heat pump

Typically £11,100 to £15,600 installed, before any grant

  • Boiler Upgrade Scheme (England and Wales): £7,500 off, or £9,000 for homes heated by oil or LPG with no mains gas (until 31 March 2027).
  • On a standard electricity tariff, running costs can be similar to or higher than a new gas boiler. Savings are larger when replacing oil, LPG or electric heating.
  • No VAT on installation until 31 March 2027.

Check for funded help

Depends on your circumstances

  • ECO4 can sometimes fund a heating upgrade or a broken boiler replacement for eligible households, under strict rules, until 31 December 2026. It is not guaranteed and you may be asked to contribute.
  • In England, Warm Homes: Local Grant can fund low-carbon heating, such as a heat pump, through your council.
  • In Wales, Warm Homes Nest can include a boiler repair or replacement for eligible lower-income households.

Signs it may be time to replace

  • It breaks down often, or repairs are getting expensive
  • Parts are no longer available for your model
  • Radiators take much longer to heat up than they used to
  • An engineer has found a safety problem they cannot fix

Before you agree to anything

  • Ask whether a repair would be cheaper
  • Get two or three written, itemised quotes
  • Check the engineer on the Gas Safe Register
  • Ask what warranty comes with the boiler and what it requires, such as annual servicing

Boiler questions

Can I get a free boiler replacement?

Not usually. There is no general free boiler scheme. ECO4 can fund a heating upgrade or replace a broken boiler for some households on certain benefits or lower incomes, where strict rules are met, and it ends on 31 December 2026. In Wales, Warm Homes Nest can include a boiler repair or replacement for eligible households. Check the official scheme before relying on funding.

How much does a new boiler cost?

As a guide, a like-for-like combi replacement is usually £2,500 to £4,000 supplied and fitted, and a new system or regular boiler around £3,000. Switching from a system or regular boiler to a combi is around £4,000 (Checkatrade, March 2026). Your home, the boiler and any pipework changes affect the price.

Should I consider a heat pump instead?

It is worth comparing. A heat pump produces around three units of heat for each unit of electricity it uses. On a standard tariff, running costs against a new gas boiler can be slightly higher or lower; savings are clearer when replacing oil, LPG or electric heating. In England and Wales the Boiler Upgrade Scheme takes £7,500 off an air or ground source heat pump (£9,000 for eligible off-gas homes until 31 March 2027).

How long does installation take?

A straight swap in the same place is often done in a day or two. Moving the boiler or changing its type takes longer. The installer will confirm after a survey, and you may be without heating and hot water while the work is done.
